Transferring Flashcards Deluxe to a new phone

Hi,
first of all, thanx for the great software.

I installed the software on my android phone, but now I am about to buy a new phone.
Is it possible to "reinstall" the paid version on my new phone? I use the same account on both, while I'm moving, then the old one will be "cleared" and dumped.

Regards,
Robert

Hi Robert,

Using the same Android account will allow you to reinstall the app for free from Play Store.

But restoring the data is something else. If you use Dropbox, one easy solution is to tap "Edit" at main Decks screen and use the Backup/Restore button at bottom.

Another option is to export individual decks to either Dropbox or Google Drive and re-add from the other device. To export, tap Edit, tap deck, Export/Share. Make sure you turn on options to export statistics and media files (if needed). Then add as new decks from the new device.

I think you can also manually copy the files in the app's data directory to the new device. This would mean viewing the device's contents on your computer, copying to computer, then copying to new device. App's data directory is at:
\Android\data\com.orangeorapple.flashcards\files
If the above doesn't solve your problem, let me know.

Hi Ernie,

thank you for your reply. Actually, the word "account" in your first sentence was the perfect key to the solution …

Previously, when I tried to reinstall, I just used the search function of the Google Play to find the app. That led me of course to Flashcard Deluxe, but that procedure is for those who hasn't bought it yet (only paid install avaiable there). Now I tried the local menu of Google Play, there is an "Account" item in the menu. In the Account menu there is an "Orders", in that one, surprise, "Flashcard Deluxe", two more clicks: view, install, and done.

Thanx,
Robert

Hello Ernie

I am about to switch phones android to android and i tried to copy the data from the old phone under

\Android\data\com.orangeorapple.flashcards\files

to the same location on the new phone.

It seems that the important files are protected (Flashcards.sql) and I cannot replace the file with another one, nor edit it. Can you give me a hint? Or is there an easier way to switch phones today?

Greets Simon

Hi Simon,

I didn't know that the file might get locked/protected. Try restarting your device. I'm assuming this is your new phone. If you don't have any flashcard data on that device, you can try deleting the app and reinstalling to see if that helps you delete the file to replace it.

Do you use Dropbox or OneDrive? You can transfer using this. Tap "Edit" in Decks screen, then Backup/Restore at bottom. Select Backup Location, then Full Backup. Turn on "Backup Media" if appropriate. Backup. Do this on your old device, right? On your new device, Restore.

Hi.

I had to:
- delete flashcards and restart the new phone,
- then delete the folder \Android\data\com.orangeorapple.flashcards from the new phone
- then copy the "com.orangeorapple.flashcards"- folder from my old phone into the \Android\data\ folder
- then install flashcards on the new phone

That's the way it works. Seems like when the app is running, it's data folder and contents are locked, which kinda makes sense. But rebooting the new phone without starting flashcards was not enough, I had to uninstall flashcards and only then could I copy the folder over

Anyway, it works now. I'll probably try the Google Drive method next time.

Thanks again Ernie

Hi Simon,
OK, thanks for sharing the steps on how you got it to work!
