Bulk preparation of cards set to pending status

Bulk preparation of cards set to pending status

Postby Danny » Sat Nov 29, 2025 8:52 am

Hi,

For the feeling of efficiency I'd like to prefill my xls with all my vocab, and gradually add the cards to active status to organic limits I choose each day.
I'd be using SRS study mode.

Is one option to just choose 'new cards' when(if?) presented with the option in each study session, studying as many as I want to bring into use, then return to the option to study my 'due cards', repeating the process tomorrow to integrate more 'new cards'? Assuming this will ignore the bulk of my prepared cards as I slowly chip away at them.

Or is it more efficient/possible to bulk update the status, eg using a column in xls?

If it's more sensible to just add vocab to the xls as I need it, sure I can do that, it just feels like it would be extra work comparatively, even though that's probably an illusion.

Also still learning the meaning of pending/new/active, related to my question.

Glad for any tips.

Thanks! Danny.
Danny

About meaning of the status, please have a look here http://orangeorapple.com/Flashcards/AboutSR.aspx.
This is also available as inside help in the app (gear, search, status, ...)

I recommend not ro update any status by yourselv or excel. Using the proper settings will do for you.
There are options how many new cards should be offered and how often they should be learnt before those become active.
Also in the setting there is a question mark to explain each setting.

Thank you Katja!

Hi Danny,
I'm very sorry for not replying earlier.
Katja had some good suggestions. The link should help. Don't try to manually manipulate statuses.
I would create your full list all at once. Definitely.

One option is to assign categories, such as "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc, and activate one at a time as appropriate. This gives you some flexibility with what you want to study. But I think not really required.

"Is one option to just choose 'new cards' when(if?) presented"
Yes.
I assume your list will be from beginner to advanced. The app will start with your first card and add them to your study material in order.
The app will pick your first 10 cards as "New". Getting the card correct 3 times in a row or swipe up one to move to "Active" (with due date). The next card will be added to your 10-card "new" set of cards.
You can control your pace this way, as cards only are added as "active" as you study in New card. mode. You even answer wrong on purpose if you want more study time before they become active.
Focus more on your due cards and less on your new cards will slow the pace. But in the beginning, you want to get a good amount of active cards going for efficiency, I think.
