Yes, I agree that I will need to add a help button around the search box so people know their options. I myself can't even remember the symbols! And hopefully I'll be adding new ways to search before too long.

I hope you will be able to start back up again soon. I know, so many things have stopped for the past two years :(

Hi Ernie,
Nice to get some direct reply from you. Our hobby was stopped for two years. But now we hope that we can start again and therefore need to use FCD daily.

The turn-around is 6 years, as you added this search function in 2019.
This will let me hope for more search function already in 2025 ;-)

To be honest, I cannot remember the extra symbol and the meaning very well although they are very helpfull.
Could you please add a helppage (or dialog window) with the description and a «?« in the search field to link that page (resp. open the dialog).

Hi Katja,

I'm not sure if I ever mentioned the below (I never advertised), but I added a few new options for search:

the* > starts with "the"
the. > contains word "the"
the.* > starts with word "the"

Adding the ability to search a certain side will likely happen eventually. I guess give me another 9 years :)
Exact match is another thing for me to consider.

Ok, thanks for the feedback.
If I added "exact match", it would give you want you want, I believe. It would still be case-independent (which sounds like what you also want).
I've got all this info in my to-do list. We'll have to wait to see how it goes.

Hi Ernie,
I`m not sure what "exact match" means and whether that would touch search result at all or only different (more exact) result depending on characters. In later case I would like that very much.
I assume that this will also distinguish between o/O (small and capitals)? That maybe a side-effect which is not so nice.

If you will work ((any time)) on search behaviour perhaps you like to have a look into my whishlist:
- consider special signs (as mentioned above)
- search in named text only e.g. text-3
- search in Notes
- show content of Notes e.g. existing filter "with Notes" could show text of first colum plus text/content from notes field in second colum (kind of ignoring list layout for that specific filter)
- search only at word-beginning or word-end e.g. "to" is too often part of a word
- search with OR and NOT

currently "to zu" will find *to* and *zu*
I recommend to use wildcards and () and "" but as I know you do not like that please find here a suggestion:
_to => will find to* i.e. words starting with to
to_ => will find *to i.e. words ending on to but also "to." and "to,"
_to_ => will find "to" ie "to" is not part of a word
1:to_ => will search only in text-1; here for words ending with to
N:_to => will search only in Notes; here for words starting with to
to OR zu => will find cards with *to* or *zu*
to NOT zu => will find any cards with *to* but not have *zu*
_to_ OR 2:_zu_ => will search for word "to" over all (maybe beside Notes) and also for those cards which have word "zu" in text-2

Hi Katja,

My search is "mark"-independent. If you search for "o", then it will return any variation of "o" with marks over it. (I guess ø is a different enough character to not match.)
If I changed this, I'd need to add an option for an "exact" match. (It needs to default to off.) Do you want me to consider such an option?

search error

Post by Katja from Hamburg » Thu Oct 03, 2013 2:30 am

Hi Ernie,

there seems to be an error in search result on list screen when using special characters.
For Dansk it works fine i.e. getting different result for bro and brø which means that characters are considered correct.
But for German there is no different for bro and brö i.e. I get for for both searches Brot as well as Brötchen.
I like the dansk behaviour more. Any change to do the same for German?
