There's nothing wrong with using those background color HTML-like tags. If they are working for you, then go for it. But if you can comfortably split your cards by category or by deck, and use a card layout to define background colors, that seems like a generally better solution to me due to keeping your card text more clean.

Instead of having different decks, you could assign a different category to each card color, then turn on advanced layout and create a different layout for each category/color. All layouts would use the same "statistics set" (e.g. "1") and would filter on a single category.

Why is this method not recommended? Just because it's kind of messy or does it cause issues?

Thank you Katja and Ernie.

The method you described worked perfectly - my combo deck now has the colors I want. Thanks again for taking the time. :)

Hi nordink,

You have a deck for each type. Are you using different "Card Themes"? That won't work. Instead try the following:

We are going to create a different "Card Layout" for each deck (with its own background color), then create a new Combination Deck with "Settings by Sub-deck" on....

For each deck, go to Deck Options > Card Layout. Select "Custom 1". To edit, tap Edit, Custom 1
Tap "Side 1->2" (used when "show side first" = "side 1")
You'll need to update background color for each side. Tap "Side 1" and notice "Background color" at bottom.

After each of your decks are done, add a new combination deck and turn on the "Settings by Sub-Deck". This option will generally use the "deck options" from the child decks, not the combination deck.

If that doesn't solve your problem, let me know.

As Katja mentioned, you might be able to use that HTML-like tag, but it's needed for each side and not pretty and not generally recommend.

Hi Katja!

I managed that for a small number of special cards by adding <background-color #FFFFCC> on first side of that cards. The card theme is «other» with an image as background and card-style is ««clear» i.e. it has no background color. So majority of the cards shows the image while some are yellow.
It seems not to work with card card-style full.

Not sure whether the effort to add a background color to each card is worth to meet your expectation.

Different color backgrounds in the same deck?

Post by nordink » Sat Dec 14, 2019 11:28 am

Hello,

I am creating some decks based on WaniKani.

WaniKani uses different color backgrounds to flag the type of item: blue for radicals, pink for kanji, purple for vocabulary.

I've tried to replicate that in Flashcards Deluxe. I've created a deck for each type, and used custom themes to make the background colors match WaniKani.

However, I would like to study all three types at the same time. I've created a Combination Deck, but I can't get the appropriate background colors to come across. The Combination Deck seems to support only one deck theme.

Is there a way to do what I want? Basically, I want different color backgrounds for cards in the same deck?

Thank you in advance!
