Hi,
Notifications are only supported with Spaced Repetition mode. Spaced Repetition mode doesn't seem appropriate for your purpose.
If you are using Android, my app can't pause audio (yet), which might be a big problem. For iOS, you can swipe up or down on the sound-play button to bring up a more advanced screen that will allow you to pause and loop sections.
Just using "Ordered" card-order mode might be appropriate. You can keep track of either "review count" or "streak" (number of times in a row you've gotten a card right) to gauge progress. Note that answering wrong will reset streak to 0. If you like streak but don't want the streak to potentially drop so much on wrong answer, use "short term goal" card-order mode and see options there to drop streak on wrong by desired amount.
If you want to limit cards, go to Deck Options > Cards to Study. For example, you can show cards that have a review count less than 5, so that once you've reviewed a card 5 times it will get removed from study.
For notifications, you might considering using another to-do type app for that.
