Flashcards Deluxe
Transfering Flashcards from Other Websites

Instructions for Transferring Flashcards from other Websites

There are many flashcard websites that have a large number of pre-made sets already created. Most of these will allow you export or copy a set's text to you own computer, but sometimes their output isn't nicely formatted for use in Flashcards Deluxe. I recommend going to Quizlet.com because of their large number of flashcards and ease of exporting to a nice format.

The general idea of transferring is just to copy the text from their website and paste into your own list, whether it be to Excel (recommended) or a text editor, which can then be copy/pasted/uploaded into this website.

Quizlet.com

Find a flashcard set you want to use on Quizlet.com and copy the text into memory:

1) Go to Quizlet.com and use the "Find Flashcards" button at the top or the "Search" box at the top-right. (Each set has its own page with several large blue boxes at the top with "Familiarize", "Learn", etc.)
2) Click the "Export" link (just below the blue boxes). A new page should be shown that lists all the cards in a box beneath the word "Data".
3) Click the "Select All" link (which is just above the list)
4) Copy the data to your computer's memory (Control-C on a PC or Command-C on a Mac)

Upload the text into this website (so that it can be transferred to Flashcards Deluxe on your device):

5) Go to my website, OrangeOrApple.com, and click on the "Upload" link at the top right of the main page
6) Paste the text (that you copied) into the "Flashcard Text" box (Control-V on a PC or Command-V on a Mac)
7) Enter a personal Deck Code. (This is just a way for you to find your flashcards from within the app.)
8) Click "Upload Flashcards". You should then see "Flashcards uploaded" at the top.

Download your flashcards from within the app:

9) Open the app on your device, then tap "+" (in the top right), "Private Deck", enter your deck code and tap "Download Cards".

While the instructions above don't say this, I recommend copying the text to your own computer and saving it (in Excel, Word, etc), so you can update and maintain your own personalized list, and re-upload to OrangeOrApple.com anytime you have changes.

StudyStack.com

You will need a spreadsheet program to open up the CSV file that StudyStack exports to. (Google Docs is free and works.) I could not get Chinese characters (unicode) to display properly, so this may only work with standard latin characters.

1) Search for a flashcard set by using the search box or the list of subjects towards the bottom of the main page
2) Once you found a set, you should 16 icons beneath the set name. Find the "Export" icon and click it.
3) Scroll down to the bottom and find "Generic CSV Export".
4) Click "Export as CSV" and open or save the file.

See the Quizlet.com section above for more complete instructions.

Cramberry.net

You will need to create a free account and be logged in to export.
You will also need a spreadsheet program to open up the CSV file that Cramberry exports to.

1) Log in
2) Click "browse flash cards" at top and find a set
3) Along the right, you should see a "download (csv/excel)" link. Click on this and either open or save.
When exporting to CSV, if the file contains non-latin characters and you open the exported file with Windows Excel, you may see garbage. To fix this, save the CSV file, open it up in Notepad, and save it with UTF-8 encoding (option at bottom of save screen). It should now show in Excel correctly.

See the Quizlet.com section above for more complete instructions.

Other Websites

Flashcardexchange.com has a huge library of flashcards, but without a paid membership it's a bit tedious to export from, but it's doable. I'll put some more notes about this later.

If you have any questions about transferring from any website or program, feel free to send me an email.
