I'm studying a language and would like to be quizzed from both directions. Do I have to create a duplicate deck and reverse the columns, or is there another option that I'm missing.

| Ernie | TimS, it depends. The simplest solution would be to go to "Show Side First" setting (in Study Options) and change this between "Side 1" and "Side 2". Now the complication... When using "Short Term Goal" or "Spaced repetition", cards build up statistics over time (how well you know them). Each card has only 1 set of statistics. So if you don't mind sharing statistics for both directions, then just use the "Show Side First" setting. Otherwise, import the exact same flashcard text twice to create two identical decks. Change the 2nd one to show side 2 first. Now each direction (each deck) will have its own set of statistics, and therefore its own scheduling. | 7/30/2010 |

When "Short Term Goal" is selected, you'll see "Short Term Goal Settings" option at the bottom. The first setting is "Target Streak". Progress/Mastered is dependent on this setting. I got lucky with a "staff favorite" pick, and have been doing pretty well since so far, enough to live off of pretty comfortably, but I have no idea how long this will last. With more and more apps getting created, it makes it more tough. I would say yes, its possible, but to quit a job with hopes of a single app to support you just seems like a big gamble. (Well actually some guy ported TeX Live to iPad from what I heard on the TeX Live devel list). | Norbert | Hi Ernie, another suggestion: Most of my flash cards are two or three times copied in the app. E.g. once for asking Japanese->German, once for asking German->Japanese. Or once for Kanji->Reading, Kanji->Meaning, Meaning->Kanji(writing). That is fine when I use lists on my server so I can import them, but it is bad if you have to add cards on the device, or you want to fix a typo, misspelling etc, I have to go through all the copies of a deck and change it. The reason why I have these copies is to have separate SRS statistics for each direction of learning. Now the suggestion: Maybe it is possible in the future (long term I assume) to have only one set of cards and the statistics are saved within the "deck", which means I can make many combination decks from the same set of cards, and the statistics will be kept separately. | Ernie | Hi Isabel. 1) You can bold/highlight/color words, but it requires you to format it using text "commands". See the section "Formatting Text" on my main page. 2) I'd like to do multiple choice questions, but this probably 6-9 months away. 3) You can insert bullets and new lines. When you create your text, just copy-paste a bullet into the text just like any other characters. You can use "|" to force a new line in a flashcard when creating text on your PC. 4) I use a scale from 1-3 (swipe up, right, down). I believe this gives an appropriate amount of control without being to simplistic (yes/no) or overly complicated (5 responses). | 7/26/2010 |

This is the easest way. 2) If you want to do it in the app, add categories by going to the card listing screen, View, Categories. Currently, I describe the screen hierarchy as: deck listing, (tap deck) study screen, (tap two-card icon at bottom right) card listing, (tap card) card edit. You mention search, but you can search in card listing screen. Maybe you can use these terms to help me understand. You also mention view flaschard. I've had requests to view/go-to a flashcard from the card edit screen, either jumping to it in the study screen, or by opening up a single card "testing" screen so you can see what it will look like. | 7/25/2010 |

What I'm wondering is if a new "mode" couldnt be made so that when you to go into a deck, (like you're going to study them), and when you tap the "edit" icon in the lower most right corner, to be able to not just edit the cards, but be able to search through them, and it wouldn't take you into the "edit" mode. Instead, in this new mode, I'd like it to take you to the actual flashcard; I'm suggesting this because I'm making a sort of dictionary of Spanish verb conjugations. There is only this "multiple choice" feature I really miss. In some cases (having some nasty similar words or other things I still mix) its a nice and effective method for exercising.
You mentioned, that you already think about it. May I add, that I'm wishfully looking forward to it? ;-)) BTW I think it's only effective, if you can tap the guessed answer (not like "cram") and get the solution right away (the quizzes of "Levitate" are done well in that sense, but not editable). If only the last review is blank, it means that the import did not understand how the date was formated in the text. | Ernie | Micky Panda, I agree with you, and I will tackle this at something point, but here is my argument for why it's not high on my priority list... If it you see it quickly again it means either 1) you are practicing new cards or 2) you just got the card incorrect. Assuming 1), I recommend being aware or when a card will become active with a correct response, thereby conciously choosing when to make a card active. If you are not ready, answer wrong. Even if you don't do this and make a card active, you already answered it twice correctly before the quick repeat, so you probably know it alright and it will get repeated in a day in active mode and give you a good test then. 2) If you just got the card wrong, the interval will have dropped appropriately... even if you answer correct because it's tested again quickly, it will be repeated most likely in the next few days providing a better test. So in summary, I agree with assessment, but I don't think it has any real impact on your long term learning. I'll be fine-tuning this at some point. | 7/23/2010 |
| Micky Panda | A correct answer can put the card to Active (Not Due) or return a card to 'Not Due' status that was already Active. Such a correct answer has little value if the previous time the card was asked was only one or two cards earlier, whether previous answer was correct or wrong. So I don't like to see a card go to "Active Not Due" without a minimum gap since the previous occurrence of perhaps 8 cards (should be tailorable). If all cards from a group of 10, except the last one, were Strongly Correct or perhaps correct for 3rd time, it seems quite possible for the last one to return virtually immediately as 1st, only, or 2nd card in next group. This seems wrong to me.
If I get an active due card wrong, I would like to have option to get it right at least twice before returing it to Not Due, and correct with at least x cards interval since last time saw the card (and its answer). Otherwise there is no evidence have really taken it into the brain beyond a fleeting memory.
When counting times correct before going active I also need a minimum gap of x cards since previous view of this card.
Even if card skipped next group of 10, before reappearing, would be better than appearing twice in a row or very close to twice in a row.
I don't mind a fairly short gap after a wrong answer (although not twice in a row), as long as a following correct answer still requires a gap and correct again before returning to 'Not Due' status.
These are fairly minor issues, but I merely report what to me is strange behaviour. Anyone can get a card correct if repeats with no gap or only 1 card gap. But that later correct answer has no implication of real learning! Its just something that goes in and straight out again. | 7/23/2010 |
| Ernie | Terry, sure. From within the app, tap + in the card listing screen. If using the upload process, you have two options: 1) Upload a full updated card list or 2) Append just new cards. I use method #1... Upload your "master" card listing and upload my server. To update your existing deck, tap "Edit", the deck, "Download" then Replace All Cards. (You'll need to use the same deck code.) The only difference between this and creating a brand new deck is that statistics should be retained. 2) If you want to append, just upload the new cards with the appropriate deck code, and use the "Append" option. | Ernie | NickL, I wouldn't think you need to make any changes to your router. I did this as a test now. I put a file in my Ernie/Sites directory, test.txt. I then typed the following address into Safari on my Mac, http://192.168.1.104/~Ernie/test.txt. It brought up my text file. You should try this on your Mac. It sounds like you did this successfully. Next step is try typing the exact same address in *Safari on your iPhone*. If the text is shown, then it should work within the flashcards app. If not, then you've got some connection problem... at this point, I'm not really sure what to suggest. | 7/23/2010 |

| Ernie | WheezyG, hand drawn flashcards is not something I'm go to support in the near future. There are already plenty of apps that allow you to draw and save the pictures in your devices library. You can then import this picture as a side of the card. Yeah, it's a two-step process, but it should work fine. On my main page (in the formatting section), I mentioned a website that will create nice JPG pictures of complex formulas given a text definition. These pictures can be used in the flashcards. Other than that, I probably can't help you as I'm not sure when or if I'll get to supporting what you are looking for. | 7/22/2010 |
| WheezyG | I downloaded the free version of your app and while I love the features it is missing a very important one, that is, the ability to draw flash cards. As a student of mathematics, I need to be able to sketch out formulas with typed up definitions all on the same card. Take for example the Math Subject GRE. I need to brush up on Differential Equations prior to taking the exam. I wanted to make a set of flash cards with a generalized example of a DifEQ on the frompnt (hand drawn) then on the back the typed technique required to solve it as well as a hand drawn image of the solution. I will gladly purchase your app when this feature is added. | Aaron | Hey Ernie, I have a couple of suggestions for my favorite app: 1) sometimes I think I understand a concept that I have made a card for. But then sometimes I get more information that has to do with that card so I add more information to that card. I think it would be nice if I could go into the statistics screen and be able to reset the card to zero. I know I can change the status to new or pending on a different screen but it retains the statistics. 2) I mentioned this before, I am not sure if you liked the idea or not, so I will mention it again. When I go to edit my most recently made card I need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the deck. At first this wasn't a big deal but now my deck has over 900 cards. It would be nice if the most recent card was at the top. 3) speaking of a 900 card deck --- I feel guilty exporting a 30 MB file to your servers every couple of days (I have a lot of pictures). I tried to follow your instructions about using dropbox but I did not get it right. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Sorry, I am not a computer guy. Maybe you could show some screen shots, do a screencast, or dumb it down for me. In the meantime, I will try again. 4) I love being able to write on the screen. I also discovered that I can answer a card right or wrong by adding icons to the bottom of the screen; an alternate method for answering a card other than swiping. I would love to be able to write on the full screen. I guess this would mean that the area would not need to be darkened for the writing window. If you don't like the idea I think the writing window could be replaced with a lighter one or a single dotted line in the middle of the screen outlining it. Currently, it is sometimes hard to see what is behind the gray area. 5) I would love to change the width of the ink in the drawing area to a smaller one. Sorry this is long and thanks for hearing me out. | Ernie | tommo43, Go to the card listing, tap on a card and it will say "Card" at the top. This is what I call the card detail screen. You can see a section at the bottom for "Side 1-3 Sound". Tapping on the row should bring up the record screen. If you see a question mark graphic, you probably need to delete this first before recording another one. To delete, swipe left on the row to show the red Delete button. You said you had sound files before. Did you record them in this screen within the app? After doing so, you should backup to my server then export back to your PC so you have a backup of both your deck and the sound files so they can be restored if needed. You seem to have the text, but not the sound files. Remember, don't treat my server as a permanent backup storage place, just a transfer mechanism. Maybe the answer to your question is just to delete the existing sound (even though it's missing) before trying to record a new one. | 7/22/2010 |

For combination decks, you can't manipulate categories so easily, right? You need to go to each source deck and manage them one at at time, as that is where the categories are defined (not in the combination deck). I don't see any way around this. When choosing "Cards to Study" for a combo deck, you have to select the category for each source deck separately. I'd like to have an option to be able to set it once for all decks, but I'll work on this. Bottom line, I'll try to add some more flexibility to the combo deck, but there will always be restrictions as some things will only be a source deck property. | bnz | Just an idea regarding the Latex support: if somone really wants that, you could write a Perl script or something that processes the tab separated text file before you upload it. Put the Latex stuff in [tex][/tex] tags or something and such a script could process the tags to replace them with a picture that the script generates (and places in your Dropbox media directory for example). It's just often that when I move cards I dont have the category in my source deck (and cant generate on this stage but only set an existing one). The second thing is that when I want to move cards from a combi deck I cant set a common category for these cards as they are in different decks. I'm a big fan of your combi decks. I use them e.g. for having different presets of the repetition mode params. If I study I often dont change the params of the examining mode but rather the content of the combi deck. I also have to say this is the best customer support I have ever seen in my life- you seem to get back to users within a day or so (and at times, even less)! I have one question though- I'm using the application on my iPad, and I have a slight problem (well it's not really a problem, just a convenience complaint); the font sizes provided don't really do justice to the size of the iPad screen. "X-large" is the one I'm using right now, but a lot of the screen is unused and the words are still quite small. Switching to "giant" messes with some of the words and causes them to sometimes be cutoff. (50MB would be a lot of sounds, and would even that matter?) If you transfered the sounds, you know what you put on. If you added the pictures/sounds within the app, you can export to my server and transfer to your computer to get it's size... even transfering a few "sample" media files might give you a sense of how much space it's taking. The more times I get a card right in succession, the less often I want to repeat, so the multiplicative interval is perfect for me (and most language learners). A big thanks for the change allowing "strong interval factor" to be set higher than 3. I use 5 instead of old 3 times maximum. I use 2.5 now for "correct interval factor" instead of default 1.4 (which seemed somewhat too low). The reason is that for strongly correct cards (or even cards I got right twice in a row), I know there is a very low probability of getting them wrong, so my time is more wisely spent on new cards and cards I don't know so well. With thousands of words to learn, I must concentrate on stuff I don't know well or don't know at all.

It would be better to change to a linear offset value. e.g. switch it to "plus 30 days" as soon as it has reached the due value "100 days"(both values into the prefs) though your "maximum interval" was a very important first step. Another idea is to use a multiplier for a deck to "multiply" each due date with e.g. the value 0,7. Good set of tailoring options. I use 2 times longer after correct answer and 3 times for strongly correct.
Tailoring background screen colours is wonderful to make it easy on the eye. I use white writing on pastel shades (e.g. aqua) even if might use a bit more battery.
Multi-deck mode is great because I really want to automatically study all decks together and let Spaced repetition do the rest.
Loading decks from my Excel sheet is so easy!
Its a pleasure to do Language vocab training nearly every day now while on the train to work and coming home.

In this way, you don’t have to have a copy. 2) Yes, sometimes a card will repeat quickly. If you are studying new cards and you are not ready for it to become active, just answer wrong. For due cards, to good news is that it will get scheduled again quick enough after a correct (since you must have gotten it wrong to force a repeat). I hear you though. I’ll find ways to fine-tune this in the future. 3) As for crashing, I recently fixed a problem when changing the card order for all decks at once. I didn’t know it would crash when making any other setting. If it’s not the card-order you were changing, let me know what setting you were changing to make it crash if you come across it again. | Micky Panda | I have just starting Flashcards Deluxe using to learn Deutsch (German). This app is much better than other iphone flip-cards! (by a long way), so I am already a fan. I am using "spaced repetition" of course! As I need to learn both Deutsch to English (easier) and then English to Deutsch (harder), there doesn't seem to be a separate set of statistics depending on which side is displayed first. I have therefore created two copies of each deck, one for Deu-Eng and one for Eng-Deu. Is that what I should be doing? Drawback is may need to do edits twice. I would like to see a minimum number of cards before repeat enforced in all circumstances, one minimum for a wrong answer and obviously a higher minimum for a correct answer (and controllable interval). Sometimes a card seems to repeat too soon since last view. When too few due cards left, it probably should mix in pending cards as well to ensure reasonable spacing.
I don't undertstand why wouldn't have an option to study both due and pending cards mixed together, even if wish to exclude new cards until all due and pending are done.
BTW, I am definitely a "love to tap" man and dislike swiping, so I have tailored my deck to use tapping. If I try to change settings for "all decks" (rather than selecting decks individually) the app usually crashes out without saving the setting changes on my iphone.
Please understand my problems are very minor and that no App will be perfect for everyone. My overwelming view is that this app is fantastic!

| Erick | Hello. I downloaded your flashcard app and I found that this is the BEST flashcard app I have seen so far. I think you probably heard a lot about that already, so let me talk about specially what make this app so special. A lot of the other apps have so many different types of restrictions when it comes to inputting the studying materials (e.g. Subscripts and superscripts for chemistry). Your app really give us a lot of freedom in terms of what we want to input and how we want to input (seriously, Quizlet import is good, but still is limited sometimes...). I really hope that the Android version will be possible in the near future because ALL of the flashcard app that can utilize Quizlet functions are very limited or poor... Thanks.

| Rob G | Hey guys, great app. One idea I had was a networked "Buddy" approach. I see the front side of the card on my iPhone, my buddy sees the back side on his. I give my answer, he compares it with what he sees, and marks it right or wrong, which advances to the next card on both iPhones.

| Norbert | Hi Ernie! Coming back to an old question: Do you think there will be a way to export big sets of decks via email? You remember that I reported that the internal email program cannot handle more than 20 or so attachments.
I would already be happy the all decks could be exported in *one* csv where the single decks are separated by NEWDECK;<deckname> or similar. Splitting them afterwards will be easy.
That way no need for zipping or anything else, just merge *all* flashcards into one big csv separating the different decks with some magic string and the deck name.

So what you are proposing is that I put the functionality of 3 other apps into my Add Picture routine? :) Yeah, I hear you, but I've got too many other areas of the app to work on at the moment. | Aaron | Hey Ernie, I use your app probably 4-5 hours a day to study for a professional exam. I only create flashcards on my iPad. It might be nice to do the following: if I am creating a flashcard and I want to add a picture, I click on side 1 to insert a picture and then I have the option of searching google images for the picture that I am looking for. Click on the picture that I want and it inserts. It might also be nice to edit that image. For example, maybe I downloaded a picture that is mostly what I am looking for but need to add some data. So I pull out my finger and draw in what is missing on the picture I just downloaded. More simply, it might be nice to just draw something with my finger and use it as a picture on one of the sides, like an equation that is too difficult to type in. Currently, I use the "image pro", "adobe ideas", and "photo pad" apps to collect pictures, draw pictures, and edit the collected pictures, respectively. This takes a lot of switching between apps. First of all I love the app. Making decks is simple plus they can be uploaded to Quizlet using the same text format which is great for a back up server. I do have a question though that I truthfully haven't looked much into but decided to ask here anyway. Is there a way to reorder the decks/folders on the main page? I'm kind of OCD about proper order and when I go to add a new deck or folder and I want it to be in a certain spot on the list I end up having to put all the decks into folders, changing folder names, deleting them, taking decks out of folders and such to get that particular item where I want it. Is there a way to freely move a Deck/Folder and if not could that be implemented into a later version of the app?
Once again I love the app and look forward to future updates regardless.

If you open up the text file in notepad and see that there are no line-feeds, open the text file up with a spreadsheet or web-browser to see if that helps. If you have pictures or sound files, my app can interpret these anki codes as-is if you use a "media dir URL".
